Delfina -- An Indie on the Path to Success

By George Ziemann -- March 20, 2010

Some people will tell you that you need a record label to gain attention in the world of music. Maybe you just need a good publisher that knows how to get your music out, like maybe getting it placed as background music to a national advertising campaign.

Her bio points out that she is a 20-year-old from Argentina, developed a passion for writing poetry at age 11, inspired by her 7th grade teacher to "express her feelings on paper."

More from Delfina's bio:

"Inspired by an eclectic list of songwriters from Carole King and Carla Bruni, to Gavin Degraw and John Mayer, Delfina decided to revisit singing and add music to her lyrics. Without a guitar of her own (her parents wouldn't buy her one until she finished her college essays), she borrowed them from friends and taught herself to play. And then on one Tuesday night in 2007, she got up the courage to perform at an open mic night at her neighborhood Coffee Bean. The crowd loved her and the time slot turned into her regular Tuesday night gig. She performed at the Coffee Bean every week for a year ("on a $100 guitar that my parents eventually bought me from Costco!"). Despite receiving a full scholarship to Pepperdine University, Delfina made the decision to pursue a career in music.

"She continued to play local shows, supporting herself by modeling on the side, and it wasn't long before Delfina was discovered by a well-known producer who brought her to New York to audition for major labels and music publishers. Primary Wave Music Publishing immediately noticed her raw talent and beauty, signing her to a publishing deal."

Her first single, "Window" (available on YouTube here, and the "related links" point to several other examples of Delfina's work) has been picked up by Nivea for use in its "Smooth Sensation" commercials. "Of all my songs," she says, "this one makes the boldest statement for me. I'm professing to the world that I make things better with just a little faith and time."

After watching Delfina in several YouTube videos, she has a head full of curls that you want to run your hands through, an attractive face and an equally beautiful voice that lends itself to the low-key (almost easy listening) production, putting her and her songwriting/guitar playing skills front and center. She doesn't scream for your attention; her "talent" is not costume changes. She tells you stories that are worth listening to. which is a distinct improvement over the majority of the lameness pawned off on us as "pop" music.

So far, Delfina is still unsigned (or I wouldn't be talking about her), but she seems to be doing very well for herself and we're hoping that trend continues for her.
