How to Download a Song

by George Ziemann -- October 7, 2008

I've been corresponding with a couple of old friends from high school, both of which recently claimed that they didn't know how to download music from the Internet. These guys are otherwise intelligent life-forms. They can use e-mail. So they're missing something obvious, and I'll bet they're not the only ones.

Fortunately, I used to be a software instructor, so I know you need pictures and a sample file to work with. As an example, here's a totally kick-ass and completely legal song for you to use

Don't Wait Till Tomorrow
3:25......6.2 MB
Stream
.....Download

Clicking on "Stream" will make the song play, either in software on your hard drive or in a separate window, with a player that probably looks like this:

But streaming isn't downloading. There is a difference. Streaming is listening, but you can't save the song and put it on your iPod. Even if you save it, you'll have a tiny little text file that knows where the song is, but not the actual song itself.

Clicking on the word "Download" will generally give you the same player as above.

If you press and hold (as opposed to clicking) the down-pointing arrow at the right side of the player, you get a menu. I think Windows users have to right-click to get the same thing.

Update (Feb.4, 2009) -- On Mac OS X, hold the control key and click.

Choosing "Save As Source..." will give you the standard save dialog box for your operating system. The file should already have a name and the .mp3 extension.

You could have gone directly from the original link by doing the press and hold thing there. The only difference is (on my machine anyway), is that it says "Save Link Target As..."

That's it. End of lesson. Just watch out for the illegal stuff out there.
