In 2007, there was a lot of discussion in the media about the resurgence of the vinyl format. Going by the RIAA numbers, it's really hard to find anything which could be called a resurgence. There's a little bump there, but you have to look really, really close to find it. If there is a vinyl revival going on, the major labels don't seem to be taking part. Eliot van Buskirk over at Wired looked at the same numbers I did and determined that vinyl sales are "exploding." Later in the day, the explosion had been downgraded to "climbing." Personally, I think that's still rather generous, considering that the "climb" has only happened once in a row and consisted of about 400,000 copies. You have to disregard 90% of the available data to even see it. I would go with "increased slightly." |
